MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : Two early penalties to the Saints gave Rudge an early opportunity to drive over the line but the Leeds’ defence held her up. The initial stages were characterised by Saints’ domination territorially. In the ninth minute the home side’s first real attack saw Bruce being repelled by resolute Red Vee defence. Smart kicks from Gaskin piled more pressure on the Leeds line but the efforts were in vain. An injury to Zoe Harris forced her to leave the field with Jodie moving to half back and Casey entering the fray. The 20 minutes mark saw the first score of the match, a well taken try for the Rhinos by Breyer in the corner. The next five minutes witnessed more home team attacking but all efforts were repelled. After 26 minutes Vicky Whitfield powered down the middle, Cunningham delivered a short grabber kick which bounced off the posts into the hands of a hungry Faye Gaskin who plunged over for a try. Faye converted her own try to put the Saints into the lead by 6 points to 4. After 33 minutes the impish Faye Gaskin was at it again. She dummied her way down the left channel and powered over the line. A great conversion by Faye left the scores at 12 points to 4. This proved to be the last scores in the first half.

The second stanza saw the Saints take a firm grip on the game as Dani McGifford scored a blinder after surging down the left touchline to score in the corner. Gaskin narrowly missed the conversion. The third quarter of the match was characterised by fierce exchanges between two top teams. Leeds were certainly pressing to close the gap. The Rhinos were rewarded after 58 minutes when talented Mel Howard fooled the Saints’ defence with some outrageous dummies to score. Within a minute Howard was at it again dummying her way to the try line to score beneath the sticks. Bryer converted to bring the scores to 16 points to 14 in favour of the Saints. Nerves were jangling and the game moved to a thrilling conclusion. With just 12 minutes to play Leeds regained the lead when Ruby Bruce collected the ball from dummy half and forced her way over the line to score. Leeds had their tails up now and made further raids on the Saints’ line. Great play from Beri Salihi helped keep the Rhinos at bay. A missed Leeds penalty goal with just three minutes remaining left the match on a knife edge. As the game moved into the final minute Caitlin Casey made a great run to score a try for the Saints. The crowd held its breath as Faye Gaskin converted the try to seal victory for the Saints and leave them unbeaten in the league in 2025. All agreed that the contest was the game of season to date.
