MATCH REPORT |

MATCH REPORT : Following on from a big win last time out in the league over Warrington, we would be looking to carry that form into this game against the league’s form team so far this season. With our last game against the Warriors being at Wembley in a loss in the Women’s Challenge Cup final, we would be looking to right some wrongs from that game, and we would need to in order to come away with the points. Wigan would go into the game with us as the only two unbeaten teams left in this year’s competition, but managing to better us with five wins from five against out four wins and one draw. After a big performance last time out against the Leigh Leopards too, they would be full of confidence going into this one, and with a number of injuries across our backline through the game, the task would become even greater. The opening exchanges were highly competitive and the Saints showed great guile in attack and defence. After10 minutes Dani McGiiford, following some crisp backline passing, created space for herself on the halfway line and demonstrated great pace to cross for the first try in the corner. Faye Gaskin obliged with the conversion from tout wide. After missing a penalty goal Gaskin created havoc in the Wigan defence and as she was being tackled Faye offloaded to a supporting Channy Crowl who plunged over for the second try for the Saints. After 31 minutes Beri Salahi pulled off a brilliant tackle to prevent a rampaging Izzy Rowe from scoring. Wigan were pressing strongly now and their first try came in the shape of Georgia Wilson scoring in the corner. Just before the half time break another stunning offload from Faye Gaskin found Vicky Whitfield following up to score Saints’ third try. unfortunately Gaskin his the post with the conversion attempt. The half time scoreline of 16 points to 6 was a fair reflection of game at that stage. The start of the second half witnessed a different Wigan side and in the first 18 minutes they had pulled back two tries from Grace Banks and Ann Davies. With the match in the balance, Luci McColm landed a penalty goal to establish a two points lead. In the 68 the minute Emily Rudge created a break for Luci McColm who obliged by scoring a try in the corner. With just six minutes to go Eva Hunter of Wigan made a splendid break down the left and managed to score for the home team. Izzy Rowe converted the try to bring the scores level at 22 points apiece. This proved to the final outcome. All who witnessed the match admitted that it was clearly the best match of the WSL in 2025 to date. |
