Berlin Barnes by Alex Service
Berlin Barnes can be easily located on the 1901 Census as a result of his distinctive christian name. His address in 1901 was the Mill House Inn at Rainford, where his father was licensee. He is listed as being 11 years old. Fast forward to the St.Helens Newspaper for 20th August 1909 which carried areport of his signing. "The Committee on Wednesday were so pleased with the earnestness and ability of Berlin Barnes of the Dentons Green FC that they signed this enthusiastic young forward on after the practice."
Although he did not play many matches in the First Team, it is likely he was a regular A Teamer. He is seen on a Recs team photograph from 1922, but he is not in kit. It is believed that he did sign for the Recs after leaving Saints, but a timescale cannot be given at this stage.
Unfortunately, Berlin met an unfortunate end while watching the St.Leger horse race at Doncaster. He was taken ill before the start and died early the following morning. Apparently as a Pilkington employee, he had been transferred to Doncaster from St.Helens. The funeral took place at Kirk Sandal church and he left behind three children and a widow. He did play for both Saints and Recs and was a Recs Committeeman. In Yorkshire, he was also President of the Junior Rugby League in his adopted town.
