Joseph Scott by SHS
Joseph Scott was a regular member of the A team forwards at Knowsley Road when he made his debut against Broughton Rangers on 24th September 1904. Unfortunately, it was not the best of times for the club. The team had lost four matches on the bounce, including two of them at home and the Committee had selected a forward, Frank Lee at full-back for the trip to Broughton. There was also a poor gate as a result of the counter attraction of racing at nearby Castle Irwell. Although Frank was moved to his more accustomed position in the pack to join Joseph Scott, it made no difference. The Saints were well-beaten by 24-5 and it was back to the drawing board for the Committee.
Joseph's second and final match for the seniors was the victory against Wakefield Trinity at Knowsley Road, on 12th November 1904. In a forward pack that contained the familiar names of Jimmy Mavitty, Cumbrian Joe Thompson and club legend Billy Briers, the Saints at least managed to come through with both points in a 5-0 success. Scott remained with the reserves, although where he went to after leaving Saints is unknown. A coal miner, he was born in St. Helens but later lived in Pennington Road, Leigh. Joseph died in Leigh in 1954 at the age of 72.
