Ray Price by SHS

A fine stand off half, who originated from the Abertillery Rugby Union Club, Harold Raymond Price, otherwise known as ‘Ray’ began his rugby league odyssey with Belle Vue Rangers just after the war and made over 200 appearances between 1947 and 1953. He was a tough customer, but with a good creative game and he could also kick goals when required.

The Blaina-born star moved to Warrington from 1953-57, where he became a popular figure with the fans for his dominant displays in the halves. During over a century of games for the Wire, he picked up a Championship winner’s medal in 1954 and took part in the memorable replayed Challenge Cup final against Halifax at Odsal, which produced a crowd of over 100,000.

On the international front, Ray represented Great Britain on 9 occasions, touring Australasia in 1954 and he was also a member of the 1957 World Cup squad. He played six times for Wales and twice for the Other Nationalities tea. Quite a record of achievement.

He was in the veteran stage of his career when the Saints snapped him up from Warrington, where his experience at stand off would complement the youthful exuberance of his scrum half partner Alex Murphy. In stand off terms, comparisons may be made with Frank Myler and Bill Francis, who also came to Knowsley Road relatively late in their respective careers.

Ray played the majority of his matches in the number 6 jersey. His best performance in terms of points came in the 29-6 victory over Workington Town at Knowsley Road on 23 November 1957, when he scored 2 tries and kicked 7 goals.

His most talked about appearance in red and white was undoubtedly on 26 October 1957, when Leeds were defeated 36-7 in front of a huge crowd at Knowsley Road, who were there to witness the debut of new signing Tom van Vollenhoven. Ray was the undoubted Man of the Match, with his guile and quick hands keeping the threequarter line moving on a landmark afternoon for the St Helens club. He also chipped in with a three pointer himself.

Alas, Ray did not play that many matches for the Saints and the last of his 20 appearances was at home to Blackpool Borough on 29 March 1958, when he filled in at left centre in a 25-11 victory. It always seemed to be a short term arrangement with the Saints as apparently Ray travelled north from his home in Wales for every game and this proved to be untenable in the long term. He passed away in Blaeneau, Gwent, in September 1988 aged 64.
