Frank Jennion by Alex Service
A local lad, Frank was a threequarter, signed after the Public Practice Matches at the start of the 1928-29 season. On 8th September, he made his debut on the left wing against League Newcomers Carlisle City and scored a try. The Saints were looking for a replacement winger for Alf Ellaby, who was still on the Australian Tour and Jennion seemed to fit the bill, initially. According to the St. Helens Newspaper, 'Jennion got the first try for the Saints seven minutes from the start and this came as a result of a smart passing movement in which a slick reverse pass from Graham, who made the opening, enabled Jennion to get in at the corner.'
George Lewis was his centre in his opening match and it is interesting to read in the paper that 'The Saints team left Shaw Street Station at ten o'clock and shortly after one pm they were having lunch at the Red Lion, Carlisle.'
He made four successive appearances, his last being against Dewsbury at Crown Flatt on 22nd September. Although Saints won 17-7, it was the last that was seen of Jennion in a Saints senior jersey. His address at the time was Woodside, Millfields, Eccleston, so he was a local lad. Could it be that he was related to Jimmy Jennion who played for St.Helens Recs and Wigan?
We know that Frank was a Police Constable in 1939 and living in Sterndale Road, Liverpool. He died back in his hometown in June 1979, aged 68. If anyone has any other information or an image of this player, please contact us.
