HERITAGE NO : 874Ray Hughes was signed from Waterloo Rugby Union. He also played for Loughborough College, Leicester and Leicestershire County. Ray was named in the provisional England Rugby Union team Under 25 vs Fiji. After his spell at Knowsley Road he moved on to Huyton in 1972 after serious cruciate ligament injury. He played sporadically over the next 5 years at Blackpool Borough,Oldham and Leigh. Outside rugby Ray forged a career in education and finally retired from teaching in Kent 2010.
Ray Hughes, born in Liverpool, was a prop forward who made one start and several substitute appearances for the Saints at the start of the seventies. He was an absolute giant of a man, at over 19 stones, but he could do the 100 yards in 11 seconds! A former Merseyside and Leicester Rugby Union representative, he was substitute on the demolition of French champions St Gaudens in the return leg of the 1971 European Championship. Ray also subbed a tight league victory against Leigh in September 1972. He also played in a couple of pre-season friendlies against Salford in 1970 and 1972. After his rugby days Ray pursued a career in teaching.
