Ivor Hopkins by Alex Service
One of a raft of signings from Welsh Rugby Union in the 1920s, Ivor Hopkins was born in Caerphilly and joined the Saints from the local club. The 21 year old front-rower played his first game at Knowsley Road, against Batley on 26th September 1925, under the pseudonym of P.Williams. He signed on after the match and everything was out in the open.
There were initial problems with his signing as he was a policeman. 'So he should know how to take his man,' quipped the St.Helens Newspaper correspondent. He was apparently about to play for the Cardiff club before the Saints offered him a trial.
Ivor played the last of his 11 matches for the club against Leigh on 20th February 1926. In 1939 he was living in Drakefell Road, Deptford, London and a change in occupation found him operating as a Cable Hand on the Tramway. He died in Chatham, Kent in April 1997, aged 96 - quite a life journey. He was survived by his wife Rose née Chapman and a son also called Ivor Stanley Hopkins who died in 2015. We were delighted to report that we have now found descendants of Ivor who were thrilled to receive his Heritage Certificate. Many thanks to Nansi Hartland of Caerphilly for facilitating the presentation.
