BIOGRAPHY

HERITAGE NO : 609
Fred Higgins was a solid second rower who played 14 matches for the Saints between September and December 1944. He became a regular for the Chemics after World War Two. Indeed, Fred progressed to international status playing four matches for England and representing Great Britain in the early 1950s. Fred was inducted into the Widnes RLFC Hall of Fame. In his guesting role for the Saints he kicked a goal as part of a drawn match against Huddersfield on his debut. He also scored a try against Barrow in a Yorkshire Cup match. The notable second row forward was the younger brother of Jack and Alex Higgins, the latter being the Widnes and Great Britain stalwart of the 1930s. Fred passed away in June1995 aged 74.
