MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : Saints took the lead within the opening five minutes. Good defence initially from Saints forced a dropout, Wakefield went short and the ball was patted backwards by the visitors into Morgan Knowles’ hands and he did well to fight his way over in the corner. George Whitby couldn’t convert, 4-0 Saints led. Ten minutes later, the Red V had a second try. Saints moved it down the left edge, Tristan Sailor found Whitby who faked a pass before finding Matt Whitley who sliced through a gap to increase our lead. Whitby converted, 10-0. The hosts grabbed a third within the opening 21 minutes. Saints did well to keep the ball alive down our right edge. From a Curtis Sironen offload, Saints moved it through the hands and Jack Welsby offloaded to Harry Robertson who scored in the corner. Whitby added the extras, 16-0. Further points followed. Saints had a penalty as Wakefield got caught offside in front of the sticks and opted for two points. Whitby made no mistake, 18-0. Another two points quickly followed. The hosts got another penalty in a kickable position and Whitby again slotted it through the posts, 20-0. That is how it remained until the break, as Saints held a strong lead at half-time.

Saints had a fourth try to open the scoring in the second half. A high kick from Welsby was caught in the air by James Bell who did well to offload to Whitley and he scored his second try in the corner. Whitby slotted over the conversion, 26-0 Saints led. Wakefield then grabbed their first points of the contest. Tom Johnstone broke down the left wing and found Oliver Pratt in support on his inside who scored from close range. Mason Lino was unable to convert, 26-4 Trinity trailed. A second try soon followed. An offload in the middle of the field allowed them to break, Lino supported on the outside and scored under the sticks. Lino converted, 26-10. A third followed before full-time. Josh Rourke broke down the middle of the field and kicked ahead for Pratt who won the race to the loose ball and finished under pressure in the corner. Lino was unable to convert, 26-14. The visitors tried to grab a fourth try late on but Saints held firm, as the Red V returned to winning ways with a 26-14 victory over Wakefield at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
