MATCH REPORT : Saints had a penalty in front of the sticks in the opening three minutes, as it was ruled the ball had been stolen from Alex Walmsley. The visitors opted for two points and Mark Percival converted to open the scoring, 0-2 Saints led. Wakefield looked to respond, a penalty pushed them into the Saints half but some great covering defence from the Red V pushed Tom Johnstone into touch. Saints looked to fire back. Tristan Sailor took the line on and peaked through, offloading to Jake Wingfield who broke before losing the ball under the sticks as Wakefield recovered well in defence. 20 minutes in, we had our first trip to the video referee. Saints worked the ball to the left edge, Jon Bennison broke and threw inside just before heading into touch, the ball bounced and Curtis Sironen looked destined to score but ended up kicking the ball ahead instead under pressure and Jack Welsby won the race to the loose ball to score the first try of the day. Percival made it a two-score lead with the conversion, 0-8. Wakefield grabbed their first points of the contest soon after. Saints made an error on our own line, a few tackles into the set, Trinity went left and Isaiah Vagana span over from close range. Max Jowitt added the extras, 6-8. The response from the visitors was almost immediate. The hosts moved the ball down their left edge but Johnstone knocked it on. Harry Robertson picked the loose ball up, broke a tackle and raced half the length of the field untouched to score. Percival’s kick bounced out off the post, 6-12. With six seconds of the first half to go, we had another trip to the video referee. Lomax opted for a kick under the sticks, Saints chased and Jowitt cleared the ball. The referee wanted to check if there were any infringements in the build up, with Saints awarded a penalty. The visitors opted for two points to close the half, with Percival adding the extras to give Saints a two-score lead at the break. Wakefield looked to reduce the deficit after the break. Ten minutes in, the hosts found themselves on the Saints line. First, Mason Lino was stopped inches short of the line after a move down the right edge before the hosts shifted the ball left and Corey Hall dropped the ball under pressure from Robertson. Saints’ best opening in the early stages of the second half came from a Sailor kick down the right edge, Robertson claiming it but his pass inside under pressure went forward, before Wakefield knocked it on. We had a trip to the video referee again 58 minutes in. Sailor again peaked his head through a gap and found an offload to Daryl Clark in support, he raced towards the try-line and dove over the line under pressure. After a lengthy review, it was awarded as Clark grabbed his 100th career try. Percival added the conversion, 6-20 Saints led. Another golden chance came the visitors. A penalty pushed the hosts into Saints territory, they moved the ball well down the left edge, Jowitt tried to find Johnstone with a cut-out pass but again the ball went to ground under pressure from Kyle Feldt. Try number five looked to have followed. Saints moved the ball down the right edge, Feldt received it and finished well in tight space in the corner. The try was awarded after a video referee review. Percival added the extras from the right touchline, 6-26. Again, Wakefield tried to hitback. They moved the ball down their right edge, but Lachlan Walmsley was unable to gather and the ball sailed into touch. Both sides tried to add more points to the score line, but none were forthcoming, as Saints made it three wins from three in the league in 2025 to move back to the top of the Betfred Super League table. Thanks to the Saints Media Centre for their excellent match report. |
